The ten elements of a heaven on earth–peace, security, freedom, democracies, prosperity, spiritual harmony, racial harmony, ecological soundness, and health, as well as moral purpose and meaning—are dynamic in nature. In most although not all of these basic characteristics, positive results engender improvements in the other elements.
Peace and Security The key to peace and security will largely depend on how well nations of the world address economic issues and the continued self-determination of more and more democracies.
Freedom Freedom is prized within democratic societies with the implicit belief that, on the whole, humankind will act responsibly and with merit if people are left to their own devices. In other words, self-interest allows individuals to maximize their own situations, and the sum of all these decisions adds up to societies that are greater than those that repress their people. Nation states and other groups must also assume a like responsibility and allow individuals freedom to practice the Soldiers of Love pledge to the fullest: “I will try to love and help create a heaven on earth.”
Democracies Democracy is the best form of government over the long run because it empowers the individual and ultimately society to make good choices. Democracies also discourage despots, who are corrupted by power, and provide for the orderly transfer of power. However, we must realize that democracy doesn’t always produce the best leaders in each and every election.
Prosperity Capitalism tempered by democracy and free, fair trade can lead to individual, national and world-wide growth and wealth, which can benefit each of us and all of us to the degree that our own talents, energy, drive and resources permit.
Spiritual Harmony Spiritual harmony will come only when the great religions of the world go beyond tolerance to mutual respect. This will not be easy because a great change in the thinking and spiritual lives of billions of people is required. But here again, an overall goal of a heaven on earth as we have defined it in these ten elements is a dream in the minds and hearts of people everywhere. God will provide us with the means and spirit to attain this element, through His enduring, steadfast love.
Racial Harmony The fact that the lack of racial harmony goes back to ancient times doesn’t mean we can’t overcome this obstacle. Our nation has moved forward largely by peaceful means over recent decades, and many other nations also have progressed in this basic area of human relations. The Golden Rule is critical here.
Ecological Soundness A balance between rescuing people who remain in abject poverty, developed nations’ economic progress, and tending to the world’s God-given environment is crucial to a continued, sustainable earth, especially one that conserves earth’s natural beauty.
Health Technology and medical science are critical to adequate care and improving the health of the world’s population. But also our own physical, mental and spiritual habits must embody disciplines that promote good health. Death is inevitable until God acts to prevent it. But wholesome, active behavior can achieve longer and longer lifetimes as medical science progresses and our habits improve.
Moral purpose and meaning To achieve moral purpose and meaning is perhaps the hardest element of a heaven on earth. We do not always do the right thing day by day. Our DNA and environments are not perfect and we have weaknesses that can result in horrendous things such as the Holocaust. But that does not mean that a nurturing environment can’t lead to success after success until God finally takes over and pulls us out of the misery of our human condition.
