Nonprofit to deliver 32,000 pounds of food, supplies to Westwego New Orleans CityBusiness – September 6, 2008 05:03 PM CST
WESTWEGO – An Illinois nonprofit will deliver 32,000 pounds of food and supplies to the Alario Center to help residents of the New Orleans area, Baton Rouge and Terrebonne Parish affected by Hurricane Gustav.
The nonprofit Schools Count Corp. will deliver an 18-wheeler containing the supplies to the Alario Center in Westwego at 6 p.m. today. The Schools Count Corp. has been raising money for recovery since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and promises to continue to help the region as long as there is a need. Soldiers of Love Executive Director Narah Cano connected the organization with the Jefferson Parish Emergency Command Center and the delivery was scheduled from there.
Launched in 2006, Soldiers of Love strives to improve public primary and secondary education, mental health, life skills and entrepreneurship, through volunteerism and financial assistance initially in the New Orleans area and eventually globally. For more information, visit www.soldiersoflove.org.
Nonprofit Spotlight: Soldiers of Love team up with ex-Saint’s nonprofit by Stephen Maloney of New Orleans CityBusiness
A philanthropist has recruited a former Heisman Trophy winner as one of his “Soldiers of Love.”
Philanthropist John E. Wade created the nonprofit Soldiers of Love in 2006 to help residents recover from Hurricane Katrina. Through a partnership with Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit run by former New Orleans Saints quarterback Danny Wuerffel, Soldiers of Love is working to revitalize the devastated Ninth Ward.
Wade said his organization promotes peace and harmony by making a long-lasting impact on the lives of disadvantaged people through education and training.
“We are promoting the creation of heaven on Earth, where the countries of the world live in harmony,” Wade said. “Our mission will begin in New Orleans and in the United States. As we grow as an organization we anticipate operating across the globe.”
The group partnered with the Desire Street Academy in donating textbooks to the library and a full scholarship to the school for a 10th-grade student. A devout Christian, Wuerffel founded Desire Street Academy to educate at-risk Ninth Ward youth in 2002.
